Behavior
Parents often wonder how a child behaves once that child is out of sight at school. Without Mom and Dad around, a child may behave differently. Educational professionals look at behavior differently than Mom and Dad usually do.
In his book Sisyphus and the Itsy-Bitsy Spider, ISBN 978-097984941-1, Jim Hartsell talks about knowing what a child’s baseline behavior is. If all a teacher or aide knows is how far from normal a child can go in behavior, there is no way to tell what is coming or when this behavior is coming. Also, there is little way to determine what the norm is for this particular child if there is not a baseline behavior. By determining a baseline behavior, a professional can know when a child begins to move from that baseline. External controls can be put in place to help the child control moving from what is normal for that particular child.
Having a baseline behavior for a child that has behavior issues also allows a professional to know when an incident begins and ends. If all one can say is a child misbehaves all the time, the child is not misbehaving. The adult does not know what normal is for that child. By having a baseline behavior, an adult can tell when the child strays from that baseline.
